iBeacon
iBeacon is a wireless communication protocol from Apple. It is mainly used for communication between smartphones and small transmitters called beacons.
Interaction with smartphones
Section titled “Interaction with smartphones”When an iOS or Android device comes close to an iBeacon, it receives a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) signal, reads a unique identifier and estimates its distance from the beacon. After detecting the signal, an iOS device can perform a predefined action, such as sending a push notification or showing information related to the beacon location. This behaviour is controlled by an app designed for iBeacon communication.
This opens a broad range of location-based use cases, from indoor navigation in large buildings to marketing activities such as showing special offers to customers near a store.
